A minimum of 13 people killed and 98 injured in rail accident in Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” declared the national leader.

The official reported that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Major Initiative of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the former leader, whose term concluded the prior year. This project was intimately linked to his administration's developmental vision for the southern region.

Another massive rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The building of both train projects was overseen by the nation's military, marking a notable growth of its duties in national projects. They were completed at an rapid rate, surpassing expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had also sparked significant concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the catastrophe, the head of a key rival party called for an prompt halt in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This halt was suggested until the completion of a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the situation "calls for prompt explanations."

In reaction, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in total adherence to all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and running of these vital initiatives.
