Around fifty vehicles have been marked with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German city of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Vehicles, building surfaces and mailboxes were vandalized, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they stated in a official communication.
Law enforcement say they were contacted late on Wednesday, when a man noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a reddish substance.
The liquid had been drawn in the pattern of a banned symbol, they added.
Law enforcement then found multiple other smeared automobiles and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
These symbols are banned in Germany under legislation outlawing the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials state preliminary tests indicate the liquid was most likely human blood.
"Currently there is no clue as to its source; officials are currently not cognizant of any harm in connection with the event," they added.
City officials announced they were trying "to unravel the incident" and have requested to the residents for tips.
A senior representative stated the attack rendered him without words and required to be solved rapidly.
"This act affects the center of Hanau and revives the wounds of the far-right violent incident half a decade ago," he posted on online, recalling the killing of nine people by a assailant focusing on residents of foreign heritage in 2020.
