Tetris Wouldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

Whenever a prominent honors show nears, one notices a demand for the addition of new categories to acknowledge unsung work and delight the spirits of followers with niche passions.

A fellow writer has already made for a horror game category. That would rule. So would tabletop games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification for why my demand remains most pressing above others. Here's the proposal: We need an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and typically spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise in the world of video games, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories successfully include numerous genres, and you can find room for numerous titles.

Not so for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Think about these outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: structural challenges of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Which classification works between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers published annually without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition in any category in 2014
  • Another creative title received no nominations during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
  • Only a few brain-teasers barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often small games, however the design behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games count as the most-played games in the world continuing this trend for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals well-known building titles claiming status as most purchased experience; it also contends for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, while interacting with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. You could fill five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these include experiences without proper classification at major gaming awards. Logic title developers function at the challenging frontier of video game design, producing among most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Comparable to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait decades.
